The city was originally known as Orange but, in 1882, changed to Chipley. The city was named after the railroad builder and Florida State Senator William Dudley Chipley. The town established its post office in 1883 and its first school, Berry Hill School in 1874. The school changed its name to Chipley School in 1884. The small city continued to grow and develop into what it is today.
